Player Identification and Team Formation Guidelines 2017-18
Coaches Evaluations:
Each coach will rank their own players from 1 to the number of players on their roster.
One of the paid directors will meet with all coaches within a birth year and blend the
individual team rankings into a final ranking of 1 to the number of players in
the birth year (including players who played up to that birth year in 2016-17 and
excluding those who played up a birth year in 2016-17).
All birth years will be completed a minimum of three days prior to the start of Player
Identifications. Players not attending Player Identifications will be removed and
a final list of players placed in order from 1 to the number of those players
attending player identifications will be used for the team formation process.
Player Identifications:
All players who intend on playing for a competitive team in the U9 to U16 age groups
must register for Player Identifications and pay the Player Identification fee.
All new players to the NMSA and any player who did not play on the top team in their
birth year or the birth year up the previous summer must attend the first day of
player identifications. Players who wish to play up to the age group above their
own must also attend the first day of player identifications they wish to play up
for (excludes players who did play up the past year). Players who are injured
or not able to attend the first day must notify the appropriate age group director
and the Association Administration Director a minimum of one week prior to the
first day of Player Identifications.
All players who played on the top team within a birth year the previous summer only
need to attend the second day of player identifications for their own birth year
and the birth year they are trying out up to if choosing to do that again. Players
who attend the first day of player identifications and perform at a level similar to
the players from the previous years’ top team will also be invited to attend the
second day and must attend if they are interested in playing on a top team in
that birth year. Players wishing to play up must also attend the second day of
their own birth year. The number of teams this involves at each birth year and
gender will be posted prior to the first day of player identifications. Players who
are injured or not able to attend the second day must notify the appropriate age
group director and the Association Administration Director a minimum of one
week prior to the first day of Player Identifications.
Players attending the first day of player identifications will be evaluated by a minimum of
three evaluators in a minimum of three activities. All players will be given an
initial evaluation and players only attending the first day of player identifications
will be given a final ranking by the end of day 1.
Players attending the second day of player identifications will be evaluated by a
minimum of three evaluators in a minimum of three activities. All players will be
given a final ranking by the conclusion of the second day and a final ranking of
all players from 1 to the number of players being evaluated will be completed
by the end of the second day and used in the team formation process.
Goalkeepers:
Goalkeeper Evaluations will be done for all age groups U11 to U16 and all goalkeepers
attending these evaluations will be given a final ranking of 1 to the number of
goalkeepers in their birth year and used in the team formation process.
Goalkeepers wishing to play up must attend both their own birth year and the
birth year they are wishing to play up to and will be ranked in both groups.
Final Player Identification Scores/Rankings:
Players who have both a coach rank and a player identification rank will have their
coach rank *.35 + player identification rank *.65 to determine their final score.
Players only having a coaches rank or a player identification rank will have that rank *1
determine their final score. Players will not be allowed to only have a coach
rank in two consecutive years.
All players registering for player identifications will be sorted from low score to high
score creating a final ranking of 1 to the number of players registering.
Player Jerseys and Intentions:
At the time of check in at player Identifications, players attending the first day will
receive a minimum of two colors of numbered jerseys. If a player is invited to
attend the second day of player Identifications, those jerseys will be used again
and those players will be added to the players who attend day 2.
Players attending the second day of player identifications will be asked to indicate if
there are any competitive levels that they would not play for within a birth year
if placed there. All coaches who have applied to coach and the playing levels
the association plans to field for each gender and birth year will be made
available a minimum of one week prior to player identifications beginning.
forms will be provided that can be filled out and turned in on day 2.
Play Ups:
Players who wish to play up a birth year above their own (i.e a 2004 birth year wishes to
play with the 2003 birth year) must attend the second day of player
identifications for their own birth year and be invited to the birth year they are
hoping to play up to. They must notify the proper age group director of their
intentions a minimum of one week prior to the first day of player identifications.
Their final score will be based on their player identification ranking only unless
they played up the previous year in which case their rank will be determined in
the same way all other players are scored.
In order to play up, players must be ranked in the top 7 at the U9 and U10 age groups,
the top 9 in the U11 and U12 age groups and the top 11 in the U13-U16 age
groups in the final birth year rankings to be eligible to play up and are only
eligible to play up on the top team within the birth year they are trying up to.
Coaches Selections:
All coaches interested in coaching within a birth year must fill out a coach application
form by the deadline set. Any coaches interviews will be conducted prior to the
start of player identifications.
The order of team formation and coaches associated with teams will be published prior
to the second day of player identifications. If more than one team will be
playing at the same MYSA playing level, notification of the order of teams or if
balanced teams will be created will also be published.
Team Formations:
Player Identification final rankings will be presented to coaches as soon as they are
completed (data input completed and players sorted by rank and name).
Roster sizes will be determined as needed within an age group and coaches will be
informed of the meeting dates and times for team formation to take place.
Players falling within those rosters who have indicated they do not wish to play at that
level of play will be contacted by a director to confirm and once confirmed,
those players will be removed from that group. This will be done within 24
hours of the completion of player identifications.
Within 1 Week of player identifications being completed, coaches for each birth year
will meet with club directors in the order of level of MYSA play. If balanced
teams will be formed at a birth year, coaches will meet with directors at the
same time. Directors will follow the team formation process as follows:
Coach #1 will consider the players within the size of that team roster after the players
not wishing to play for that playing level have been removed. If the top
goalkeeper from the goalkeeper evaluations is not included in those players
and the coach wishes for that player to be included, that player will be
considered the final player within that roster size and the final player will be
moved down one place.
Coach #1 will be allowed to make up to 2 coach picks at the U9 to U12 age groups and
3 coach picks at the U13 to U16 age groups. A coach pick consists of moving
a player from outside that roster count into the roster and moving a player
within the roster count out or moving a player out and moving all players up.
Coach picks cannot be used for players who are trying out up an age group.
Once Roster #1 is completed, players remaining will be reordered with players removed
from roster #1 and players who chose not to play for team #1 and/or who were
removed from Roster #1 with coaches picks being placed in order at the top of
the new list and all remaining players placed in order following those players.
Any players indicating that they do not want to play at that level of play will be
removed and Coach #2 will repeat the same process as Coach #1.
This process will continue until all teams within a birth year are formed. If two balanced
teams will be formed at a level with a birth year, those coaches will follow a
similar process considering players with equal roster sizes (i.e. if two
teams will be formed from 22 players, balanced rosters of 11 will be formed).
Team Posting and Player Declines:
All U9 to U16 aged teams will be posted on the NMSA website by midnight within 1
week of player identifications being completed and will include the team level,
coach and players identified by jersey number and initials. Players who choose
not to accept this placement must fill out a Player Decline Form and submit that
to the appropriate director and club registrar by the 8th day following the start
of player identifications. Any player who does not decline their position by that
time will be bound to the NMSA as of that date.
